Xiangtan University (XTU) is a comprehensive and national key university. It has been part of China’s prestigious “Double First-class University Plan”, which only selects elite Chinese universities and programs with global reach and impact.

XTU was established in 1958, thanks to its advocate Mao Zedong, who inscribed the name of the university and entrusted the then university leadership to “bring success”. In 1974, Deng Xiaoping and other top CPC leaders gave their seal of approval to the reopening of XTU. In 1978, the university was selected by the State Council as one of the sixteen national comprehensive and key universities in science, engineering, and humanities. In 1981, it was one of China’s first higher educational institutions to run MA programs. On September 6, 2018, President Xi Jinping made critical instructions to chart the course of the school’s development, expressing his hope that “XTU will grow stronger, with more distinctive strength”. In February 2022, the university joined the ranks of “Double First-class” universities.

XTU has a graduate school and 24 colleges/teaching departments, covering ten major disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. Among these disciplines, Mathematics is listed by the Ministry of Education as a “First-Class Discipline” project, In addition, six disciplines—chemistry, material science, engineering, mathematics, and computer science, environment/ecology—are ranked among the top 1% of universities and research institutions globally, according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI). Eight disciplines are among the 2023 Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.

XTU has one world first-class discipline, three national key disciplines, one world first-class cultivated discipline, thirteen provincial key disciplines for the 14th Five-year Plan Period (2021-2025). It has 18 first-level disciplines that have Ph.D. programs, 33 first-level disciplines that have M.A programs, 22 professional M.A programs, and 16 post-doctoral research centers. It also has 41 national-level and 15 provincial-level first-class undergraduate programs, 11 national-level and 23 provincial-level characteristic majors, one national-level and eight provincial-level Comprehensive Reform Pilot Majors, and twelve majors that were accredited by the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association.
